James Gunn doesn't plan on Suicide Squad 3 in the DC Universe's near future.

The co-CEO of DC Studios sat down on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, where he discussed his plans to rebrand the DCU in movies and television. Gunn confirmed that he will turn his attention to the Viola Davis-led Waller series and Peacemaker Season 2 for Max after he completes work directing Superman: Legacy. As far as a third Suicide Squad installment is concerned, however, Gunn gave a firm "no."

Even before he was announced to lead DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, Gunn dampened hopes for Suicide Squad 3 when he addressed his plans with The Playlist despite discussions with Warner Bros. about the threequel. "Yeah, we’ve talked about it," Gunn said. "But the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing."

James Gunn's First DC Project, The Suicide Squad

Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021) was treated as a soft reboot to David Ayer's 2016 film, whose theatrical cut was altered by the studio after the divisive reaction to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. As DC Extended Universe fans have pushed for Gunn to release the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad, rumors surfaced that Warner Bros. could be looking at Ayer to direct the third Suicide Squad movie without following up on Gunn's movie. Gunn debunked the rumor almost immediately.

While Gunn intends to continue the stories of his Suicide Squad characters, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, one actor still waiting for the call is Idris Elba, who played Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. "I love Bloodsport. I have no idea what they want to do with it. I imagine that the next time we see Bloodsport would probably be in a [Suicide Squad] movie," Elba said. "I don't think they have any plans to give him his own franchise, but there's a possibility."

For now, Gunn's attention is mainly focused on the first installment of his new DCU slate with Superman: Legacy. The reboot will star actors David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Its premise will not be a retelling of the Superman origin but instead, a focus on "both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents," who respectively "inform who he is and the choices he makes." Superman: Legacy will arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
