Following the character’s exciting post-credit debut in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 returned alongside the multiversal Spider Society in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man 2099 captured the audience’s attention with his big-screen appearance, which could mean there’s a potential cinematic future for Miguel O’Hara as well.

Spider-Man 2099 equally excited fans when the character first appeared in the comics and kicked off the entire 2099 comic line. Miguel O’Hara’s dark comic origins would be the perfect start for a Spider-Man 2099 adaptation. However, his time trapped in the past during the All-New Marvel NOW! era or his new start in 2099: Exodus are just a few comic storylines Sony Pictures could adapt.

Peter David and Rick Leonardi introduced fans to Miguel O’Hara for the first time in Spider-Man 2099 #1. The first few issues of Spider-Man 2099’s opening volume teased the futuristic corporate-ran city of tomorrow while also exploring Miguel O’Hara’s transformation into the newest Spider-Man of the future.

After Alchemax forcibly addicted Miguel O’Hara to a drug called Rapture to secure his service, the brilliant geneticist tried to rewrite his DNA to cure himself. Unfortunately, an act of sabotage led to his genetics being mixed with a spider’s DNA, creating Spider-Man 2099. His first origin story is still the best and would play out beautifully on the big screen.

7 Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man

Web-slinging heroes from different eras met for the first time in Peter David and Rick Leonardi’s Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man. After Miguel O’Hara and Peter Parker switched places in their respective timelines, they teamed up to stop the villainous Hobgoblin 2211 from erasing Spider-Man and his successors from reality.

Miguel O’Hara has already met a few different variants of Peter Parker from Across the Spider-Verse. However, fans could definitely get behind a film that focused just on Peter Parker and his later successors like Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man 2211 as they teamed up to save the timeline without the rest of the multiversal team known as the Spider Society.

6 Fall of the Hammer

One of the first big crossover storylines in the original 2099 line of comics began in Spider-Man 2099. The evil corporation known as Alchemax created the floating city of Valhalla. It used the genetic super-soldier program that originally gave Miguel O’Hara his powers as Spider-Man 2099 to create powerful new “gods” known as the Aesir.

Series like Ravage 2099, Doom 2099, Punisher 2099, and X-Men 2099 all joined Spider-Man 2099 in the original line’s first and only crossover. Miguel O’Hara’s battle against the Aesir and Alchemax could potentially introduce fans to the rest of the 2099 lineup of heroes and villains which could lead to even more animated spin-offs to further build Spider-Man 2099’s future.

Miguel O’Hara encountered a few future versions of Spider-Man’s classic villains. One of the first he met during his origin was the deadly cannibal known as Vulture 2099. However, he would soon face a dark new version of one of Peter Parker’s most deadliest foes when the alien symbiote found a new host to become Venom 2099.

Kron Stone was Miguel O’Hara’s childhood rival, and his half-brother as he would eventually discover. Punisher 2099 left Kron Stone for dead in Nueva York’s sewer, where the symbiote found him. It bonded with Kron Stone to become Venom 2099 and get his revenge on Spider-Man 2099. The new take on Venom could help bring fans into theaters if featured in a Spider-Man 2099 film.

Peter David returned alongside new artist Will Sliney for the long-awaited second volume of Spider-Man 2099 that released during the All-New Marvel NOW! era. After a time-spanning adventure in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Miguel O’Hara’s father trapped him in the present day. Miguel O'Hara set up a new life and started operating as Spider-Man 2099 in Peter Parker’s era.

Spider-Man 2099 spent a long time in the present-day Marvel timeline. Peter Parker even designed a brand new costume for Spider-Man 2099 to officially welcome him to Spider-Man’s extended family of heroes. While Spider-Man 2099’s futuristic setting would look best on the big screen, seeing his adventures alongside modern-day Spider-Man could appeal to fans as well.

3 2099: Manifest Destiny

Miguel O Hara wields Mjolnir in 2099 Manifest Destiny

Another comic that explored the other heroes of 2099 alongside Miguel O’Hara was 2099: Manifest Destiny. Taking place after Marvel canceled the entire 2099 line, Manifest Destiny gave the imprint an ending that rewarded fans of the characters. Miguel O’Hara took control of Alchemax and led Marvel’s heroes into a peaceful future after discovering the frozen body of Steve Rogers.

The former Captain America gained the power of Thor after wielding Mjolnir, though he passed it on to Spider-Man 2099. O’Hara used Thor’s hammer to lead humanity into an era of peace and exploration that lasted for 1000 years. An animated adaptation of Manifest Destiny would give fans the chance to explore 2099 while highlighting Miguel O’Hara’s impact on the future.

2 Exiles

Spider-Man 2099 with the multiversal roster of the Exiles from Marvel Comics

A variant of Miguel O’Hara returned in the comics years later in the pages of Exiles. When the powerful omega-level mutant named Proteus exposed Spider-Man 2099’s identity to his world, Miguel O’Hara joined the multiversal team of heroes known as the Exiles to hunt down Proteus and stop him from destroying other worlds and timelines.

Most fans would like to see Spider-Man 2099 appear in his own spin-off film after his success in 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse. However, the character’s renewed popularity could help launch an adaptation of the Exiles team that followed their mission to fix broken realities across Marvel’s vast multiverse.

1 Spider-Man 2099: Exodus

Yet another variant of Miguel O’Hara appeared in a new take on the 2099 universe that appeared in Spider-Man 2099: Exodus. A brilliant geneticist named Miguel O’Hara joined Alchemax, though he soon began having terrible nightmares. He also met an older version of himself who warned him that the timeline had changed and he needed to accept his fate as Spider-Man 2099.

With an updated new origin, Miguel O’Hara became Spider-Man 2099 once again and helped usher in a new era for the entire 2099 line, which even included a new roster of the Avengers. An adaptation of the Exodus relaunch would help kick off an entire world of futuristic heroes inspired by the modern generation that would definitely appeal to fans of Spider-Man 2099.
