Forgotten Realms creator Ed Greenwood teased a veritable dragon's hoard worth of Volo's Guides in various stages of development for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons players and enthusiasts alike.

CBR interviewed Greenwood alongside Brett Norton to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Neverwinter, the Forgotten Realms' MMORPG. When asked about additional projects in the works, Greenwood unloaded a wealth of Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook projects, with settings that included Ormpur on the Shining Sea and Castle Ward in Waterdeep. Greenwood's bibliography of 5th Edition guides includes The Border Kingdoms: A Forgotten Realms Campaign Supplement and Thay: Land Of The Red Wizard.

How Honor Among Thieves Impacted D&D's Sourcebooks

Greenwood discussed how the release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves informed his various projects in the works with Wizards of the Coast. Volo's Guide to Neverwinter became a project put on the back burner when Greenwood discovered the city was to be heavily featured in the film adaptation of the tabletop role-playing game. Instead, Greenwood worked on Thay: Land Of The Red Wizard as the film was in production, only later learning they'd also feature in the movie. Thay and its Red Wizards likewise played a pivotal role in Honor Among Thieves as both the film's main antagonists and the source of an unlikely ally in Regé-Jean Page's Xank Yendar.

Regarding Honor Among Thieves, Greenwood noted the film's adaptation of Themberchaud as one example of the impact film and television properties have behind the scenes. Themberchaud, the film's beloved chunky dragon, was initially developed by Eric Boyd for Forgotten Realms but was enlarged and relocated to serve the narrative purposes of Honor Among Thieves. Greenwood noted that these incorporations of lore into other properties could impact directives behind the scenes.

Ed Greenwood Teases Volo's Guide to Ormpur

Greenwood teased that Volo's Guide to Ormpur was already in development and that a guide to various Wards of Waterdeep was a project he intended to tackle next. The author named Castle Ward as a potential first stop in his Waterdeep project before elaborating on the nebulous nature inherent in producing such guides. "I should shut up and not share more because they might never happen." Greenwood concluded, "Or it will happen but morphed so completely." Despite the changes that can occur behind the scenes, Greenwood remained unwavering in his intention to keep turning out Dungeons & Dragons sourcebooks for Dungeon Masters, role players and fans.

The Border Kingdoms: A Forgotten Realms Campaign Supplement, Thay: Land Of The Red Wizard and Greendwood's many other 5th Edition guides can be found online or at physical gaming retailers.
