<![CDATA[What Came Before the First Age of Middle-earth?]]> In The Lord of the Rings, much is made of the different ages that make up the history of Middle-earth. The events of the main series up to the conclusion of Return of the King happen at the very end of the Third Age, while the Last Alliance of Men and Elves brings the Second Age to a thunderous close (as depicted at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring.) The Silmarillion novel details the devastating war between the forces of good and Morgoth, the most terrible of the Valar.

<![CDATA[Isildur's Character Development May Suffer on Rings of Power]]> Fans of The Lord of the Rings watching Amazon's Rings of Power know the huge part Isildur will play in the fate of Middle-earth. Audience members not as familiar with the books know him from the prologue in director Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring. The misguided son of the king who defeats the Dark Lord Sauron and who, when given the chance to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, claims it for himself. He's not exactly known for his stellar moral decisions, even in events prior to the War of the Ring. Author J.R.R. Tolkien outlined much of Isildur's history in supplemental materials he wrote for his epic saga.

<![CDATA[Who Are the Dead in the Dead Marshes?]]> In The Lord of the Rings, several dark and mysterious corners of the world take the story outside of the relatively linear conflict happening between the free peoples of Middle-earth and the forces of Sauron. The Dead Men of Dunharrow and the journey Aragorn takes to hold them to their oaths is the most obvious example, but it wasn't the first time members of the Fellowship had encountered ghosts. While journeying to Mordor, Frodo, Sam and Gollum have a desperately difficult journey through an area known as The Dead Marshes, with the former almost losing his life as he attempts to travel through.

<![CDATA[Lord of the Rings: Gollum Explores An Uninteresting Time Period]]> Daedalic Entertainment took a serious risk when it decided to focus a game solely on one of Tolkein's most complex characters. The main series explored the effect that a small being could have on the world compared to legendary and powerful figures, as well as how evil can corrupt anyone. No character in Lord of the Rings shows both of these concepts to the same degree as Smeagol or, as he is better known, Gollum. The developers wanted players to feel a connection to the character, but they explored the wrong period in Gollum's life.

<![CDATA[Where Do Dwarves Come From in Lord of the Rings?]]> Of the many races and stories within Tolkien's Legendarium, the Dwarves are arguably the ones who take a bit of a backseat in the narrative of The Lord of the Rings. The time of the Elves is coming to an end, and their departure from Middle-earth is critical to the ensuing struggle between Men and Orcs to find the premier successor once they have gone. Hobbits remain an extraordinary part of the story, but Dwarves (outside of Gimli) take a backseat in the descriptions of the War of the Ring. They fought bravely at the Battle of Dale and other critical skirmishes in the North, but they remain the least described throughout the three books. In the author's broader writings, though, the Dwarves have a long and storied history starting far before their starring role in The Hobbit.

<![CDATA[Why Didn't Beorn Fight Against Sauron in The Lord of the Rings]]> As The Lord of the Rings' Fellowship assembled and began traveling toward Mordor, Sauron was preparing for war. The Dark Lord didn't expect subterfuge. He expected Gandalf and company to take the One Ring to Gondor so that Aragorn could wield it against him. So, he mustered all of his armies and got ready to fight. Of course, Sauron was wrong because Frodo took the Ring and secretly snuck across the Anduin River. But even with his miscalculation, war was afoot in Middle-earth.

Gandalf and Elrond assembled a group of nine walkers to parallel the nine Nazgûl, and it was a worthy idea. But there was no way that the Fellowship was going to succeed as a group. There were simply too many trials and enemies on the way to Mordor. Besides, it wasn't like all nine of them were going to waltz up to Mount Doom without Sauron noticing their approach.

Because of that, many assume their absence from The Lord of the Rings means they refused to help defeat Sauron. However, that is far from the truth, as the Dwarven kingdoms were busy fighting one of the largest battles of the entire War of the Ring, leaving only Gimli to aid the race of Men. <![CDATA[Why Galadriel's Refusal of the One Ring Was So Difficult in LOTR]]> Tolkien designed The Lord of the Rings' Elves to be regal, stoic and strong, which made sense because they were immortal, otherworldly beings. Luckily, Peter Jackson's adaptation did a great job of portraying those qualities. Hugo Weaving's Elrond was one example. Elrond had lived for thousands of years, and he showed off his hard-earned wisdom as he spearheaded the Council of Elrond. Yet Cate Blanchett's Galadriel was an even better example of Elven majesty and strength. She was a regal queen, but she was also an extremely powerful being.

Everyone in attendance knew that the task would be nearly impossible. To better their odds of success, Elrond and Gandalf greenlit a company of travelers to accompany and protect Frodo. In all, there were nine members of the Fellowship, and together, they represented each of Middle-earth's main races: Elves, Dwarves, Men and Hobbits.

<![CDATA[Tolkien Nearly Had Tom Bombadil Fight the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings]]> Power-scaling in The Lord of the Rings can be kind of difficult. Obviously, Sauron was the most powerful being in Middle-earth, and Gandalf the White claimed to be the second most powerful. But after that, things start to get complicated. How would a fully-powered Saruman fare against Gandalf the White? How powerful would Galadriel be if she was pitted against a Maiar? For that matter, how powerful were the Nazgûl? In the movies, the Witch-king broke Gandalf's staff, but in the books, his greatest power was inciting fear. Unfortunately, a lot of those questions don't have answers.

Each of his six movies set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth features one brief appearance from the fun-loving New Zealand director. <![CDATA[How Old Is Each Fellowship Member in Lord of the Rings?]]> In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and his Hobbit companions experienced a couple of dramatic adventures before even arriving at the Prancing Pony. Then, after one of the Nazgûl stabbed Frodo, the Elf-lord Glorfindel brought Frodo to Rivendell. In director Peter Jackson's adaptation, there were no adventures before the Prancing Pony (beyond a close encounter with a Black Rider), and Arwen took Frodo to the House of Elrond. After that, however, they formed the Fellowship of the Ring, and most of Tolkien and Jackson's work align perfectly.

<![CDATA[Why Aragorn Was at the Prancing Pony To Save Frodo in Lord of the Rings]]> Besides Frodo and Gandalf, Aragorn might have been the most important character in The Lord of the Rings. Without him, Frodo and the other Hobbits wouldn't have made it to Rivendell, and after Gandalf fell in Moria, the Fellowship would have been lost without Aragorn's leadership. There were many other instances of Aragorn's bravery and heroism, but it culminated in The Return of the King when Aragorn marched on the Black Gate with a severely depleted army.

Gollum might be the best example, as his ill-fated life personified the power of Sauron's One Ring. But there were plenty of other tragic characters. The Nazgûl were promised power and turned into thralls. Similarly, Nerdanel watched her seven sons sail to their deaths, and Denethor slipped into despair after waging mental war with Sauron. <![CDATA[10 Ways Lord Of The Rings Has Aged Poorly]]> The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is largely responsible for modern fantasy. Tolkien's idea to make "a fairy story... written for and read by adults" proved to be incredibly popular, and his work continues to live on today. However, like many books that came out in the 1950s, some elements of Tolkien's work haven't aged particularly well.

The will of the Valar indicated that Faramir should have joined the Fellowship instead, but Boromir pridefully took the task upon himself. It turned out that the Valar were right because Boromir betrayed his purpose and tried to steal the One Ring from Frodo. Yet he redeemed himself in the end. He tried to save Merry and Pippin from Saruman's deadly Uruk-hai.

<![CDATA[Denethor Proved Mentally Stronger Than Saruman in Lord of the Rings]]> Saruman the White, the great Maiar that fell from grace and became an ally of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, was a force to be reckoned with. Considering the Maiar had demigod status in Middle-earth, it's hard to believe he got outsmarted so often. But Saruman's weakness looks even worse when one realizes that a Man resisted Sauron's temptations when he could not.

Having been friends, confidants and allies for thousands of years seemed like a great justifier for these two to have shared a relationship closer than friendship. On The Rings of Power, Galadriel and Elrond's relationship was displayed with some ambiguous hints of a romantic connection. But was it ever meant to be?

The Stranger showed up in Middle-earth and made friends with the Harfoots, while Adar attacked the Southlanders with his Orcs. Meanwhile, Durin and Disa discovered Mithril in the depths of Moria. Although it wasn't totally The Lord of the Rings accurate, the Balrog was awake by the end of the series. However, the series' most important plotline showed Galadriel continuing her centuries-long hunt for Sauron.

After that, Gandalf went on a 17-year research project, where he confirmed that Bilbo's ring was actually Sauron's Ruling Ring. From there, Gandalf started scrambling. He went back to the Shire and told Frodo to get out of town. Things happened a bit slower in the books, but Frodo's destination was the same in both iterations: the unsavory town of Bree. There, Gandalf hoped to meet the Hobbits and construct a plan.

Young boys, old men, and a force of Elves stood off against 10,000 fresh Ukuk-hai from Isengard. In total, the numbers were around 800 for Rohan. Rivendell offered a sense of reclusive safety, and Lothlórien displayed the Elves' hidden beauty and light. The ruins of Moria had an air of former splendor and Dwarvish determination, while Edoras and Helm's Deep showed the grit of the Rohirrim. However, the city that really stood out was Minas Tirith. Gandalf the Grey, who is actually an immortal spirit of the Maiar, certainly makes a case for his power, having been resurrected and having orchestrated the journey to destroy the One Ring. Galadriel is the last of the ancient Ñoldor, one of the most powerful beings in Middle-earth (they crafted the palantíri, after all) and, having been born in Valinor, Galadriel has the blood of all three Elf Kindreds in her veins. <![CDATA[Does Gandalf Have a Love Life? Lord of the Rings Gives an Answer]]> Largely since the release of director Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit (2012-2014), the wizard Gandalf from J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece The Lord of the Rings has become a subject of romantic speculation. Although Gandalf mostly managed to avoid any sort of connotations throughout the release of Jackson's original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The Hobbit films amped up online fan theories. In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Galadriel saves Gandalf from being held captive by Sauron, and the two share an intimate moment. She holds and kisses him tenderly on the forehead, prompting him to spring back to consciousness. It's easy to see why audiences might latch onto this scene and start concocting theories about the nature of Gandalf and Galadriel's relationship, but it doesn't exactly line up with Tolkien's intent for Gandalf's character.
