A movie's protagonist is usually sympathetic, impressive, or even aspirational. Audiences typically want the hero to win, need to see their point of view, or want to be like them. As a result, many movies feature charming, capable, and cool heroes. However, many films feature an antagonist who's just as, if not more, cool than the hero.

Some movie villains are equal to or above the hero in how impressive they are. Villains have fewer restrictions on their behavior, appearance, and general style, which can help them easily appeal to the audience. As a result, no matter how cool a film's hero is, villains like Hannibal Lecter and Agent Smith are simply cooler.

10 Agent Smith (The Matrix)

The Matrix doesn't shrink away from its stylized nature. The heroes dress in long dark coats, wear sunglasses, and bend the laws of physics in their favor. The black leather aesthetic of The Matrix's protagonists has inspired countless fans and cosplayers since. The Matrix characters like Morpheus, Neo, and Trinity are also impressive due to their stoic personalities and martial arts skill.

However, The Matrix's central antagonist, Agent Smith, can match them. His sharp suit and sunglasses feel understated and distinctive next to the heroes' aesthetic. He combines the cold efficiency of a machine with a hatred for humanity that establishes him as more than a tool. His brutal, utilitarian fighting style also helps create a cool villain.

9 Magneto (X-Men)

The X-Men movies feature many impressive heroes. Wolverine's violent attitude and metal claws have made him an icon to both cinemagoers and Marvel Comics readers. Jean Grey is a powerful telepath and telekinetic who also plays host to a cosmic entity. Professor X is the world's greatest telepath who acts as a beacon of hope to all around him.

However, Magneto, the X-Men franchise's most frequent antagonist, has become an icon in his own right. His sympathetic goals and ruthless methods have made him an effective and likable villain. He shows incredible talent with his powers, using magnetism to unparalleled effect. This is especially true in films like X2: X-Men United and X-Men: Days of Future Past where he flirts with both good and evil.

8 Roy Batty (Blade Runner)

Blade Runner's grim aesthetic has set the template for countless cyberpunk and science fiction works ever since. Protagonist Rick Deckard is a key part of this aesthetic. He's a washed-up and bitter police officer who shows great skill when it comes to hunting down and retiring Replicants.

The other side of Blade Runner's cat-and-mouse game is the Replicants, led by Roy Batty. Batty is a nuanced and morally gray antagonist who grapples with his visionary tendencies, short lifespan, and emotional immaturity from age. Roy Batty is more impressive than Deckard, thanks to the villain's design, manner of speaking, and iconic final speech.

7 Michael Myers (Halloween)

Halloween is the forerunner to countless slasher franchises ever since. Antagonist Michael Myers is a significant part of Halloween's iconic and influential nature. His unsettling design, refusal to move above a walk, and ability to stalk people have all cemented him as one of horror's most effective villains.

Michael Myers' iconic status is helped by the relative lack of coolness most of his opponents have. In most Halloween movies, Myers is hunting realistic, flawed teenagers as a larger-than-life predator. This only begins to change in more modern Halloween films, which paint Laurie Strode as a hard-bitten and driven survivor capable of matching Myers.

6 The Xenomorph (Alien)

Alien's Ellen Ripley is an undeniably impressive character. She's one of the most iconic heroes of the science fiction and horror genres. Ripley combines a hard-as-nails edge with a surprisingly soft and human side, best shown in Aliens when she cares for Newt. This contrast makes her both relatable and cool.

However, Ripley is up against the Xenomorph, one of the most infamous creatures in horror. The titular antagonist of Alien has a unique and distinctive appearance that has inspired countless horrors since. Its ruthlessness, inhumanity, and impressive special effects for the day cement it as one of the coolest creatures in cinema.

5 Hans Gruber (Die Hard)

Hans Gruber is Die Hard's most beloved villain for a reason. He's an unflappable and cold criminal with a veneer of charm that hides just how callous he really is. Most of Die Hard centers on his growing antagonism with John McClain, and he proves a charismatic and cunning antagonist.

By contrast, John McClain is an everyman police officer who spends most of Die Hard out of his depth and on the back foot. This adds immensely to their dynamic. McClain isn't a larger-than-life action hero like those who came before. He's an ordinary, vulnerable man who overcomes great odds to take out Gruber, who appears more secure than him for most of the movie.

4 Hannibal Lecter (The Silence of the Lambs)

Hannibal Lecter isn't The Silence of the Lambs' ultimate antagonist, as he's a vital ally against Buffalo Bill. However, nobody could mistake him for anything other than a villain. Hannibal Lecter is a softly-spoken serial killer and cannibal who has committed countless crimes. However, he's also Silence of the Lambs' best-known character for good reason.

Hannibal Lecter has immense presence in every scene he appears in, often taking the upper hand regardless of the situation. He's unapologetic about his monstrous crimes. However, he also has a strange sense of honor and sophistication. This contrast helps him rise above TheSilence of the Lambs' other characters, even the likable Clarice Starling.

3 Darth Vader (Star Wars)

Star Wars' Darth Vader is the most iconic villain in all of cinema and one of the most famous fictional characters of all time. The heroes he's up against aren't unimpressive themselves, drawing on popular archetypes of samurai, mystics, and cowboys. However, Darth Vader manages to be flat-out cooler than Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker.

Vader's impressive status begins with his design. He's a towering figure in black armor, immediately standing out in any scenario. Star Wars gives him some of its most impressive showings in the franchise, both with the Force and in several of the series' lightsaber duels. He combines it with an unforgettable voice, physicality, and an understated sense of humor.

2 The White Witch (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe)

The White Witch isn't a particularly complex villain in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. However, she makes up for in style what she lacks in depth. She spends the film firmly in command, terrorizing the heroes with unstoppable ruthlessness and cold charisma.

Furthermore, the White Witch is more than just an idle queen. She personally takes part in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe's final battle and rides a sleigh pulled by two polar bears. Her only real competition among the heroes is Aslan, a sapient and heroic lion who serves as an allegory for Jesus.

1 The Winter Soldier (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Captain America is a lot of things. He's a true hero, not afraid to sacrifice himself for anybody else. He's a paragon of dedication and loyalty, but not to the point he turns a blind eye to right and wrong. He's one of the MCU's best fighters, especially when empowered by Mjolnir. Later films even give him more of an edge and emphasize his sarcasm and skills like carjacking.

However, Captain America's counterpart in Captain America: The Winter Soldier has him beaten on cool grounds. The Winter Soldier is a brainwashed assassin whose goggles, eye makeup, and mask give one of the MCU's strongest aesthetics. His metal arm helps him hold his own against stronger foes. His identity as Bucky Barnes does add a tragic edge to his coolness, but there's no denying his impressive and distinctive feats as HYDRA's assassin.
