The Witcher star Henry Cavill recently revealed that fans can expect protagonist Geralt of Rivia to adopt a new attitude in Season 3 of the Netflix fantasy series.

Cavill explained that Geralt's role as a father figure to Ciri (Freya Allan) will force him to take the trouble brewing on the Continent more seriously in an interview with Netflix's official fansite, Tudum. "Geralt has been very nonchalant about these threats of war and famine and the end times [in previous seasons]," he said. "He’s like, 'Look. I've been there, done that. It's not the end times. It's just going to be another fight'... [but in Season 3] everyone is after Ciri. That changes his entire perspective on things."

Geralt's deepening bond with Ciri is one of several key plot points in The Witcher Season 3, which takes its cues from Andrzej Sapkowski's second full-length Witcher novel, Time of Contempt. In a recent interview, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich promised fans that The Witcher's third season will follow Time of Contempt's story closely, describing the show's next batch of episodes as "a much more direct adaptation" than its immediate predecessor. Hissrich added that Time of Contempt is her favorite Witcher book in large part because its focus on "big events" makes it "so easily adaptable."

Henry Cavill Says Goodbye to The Witcher

The Witcher is slated to continue for at least one more season following Season 3's release, however, it will do so without Cavill in the lead role. Cavill announced he was stepping down as Geralt of Rivia in October 2022, with The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth taking over the part in Season 4. Hissrich has since confirmed that Netflix approached her and her fellow executive producers about the possibility of ending The Witcher following Cavill's exit, but they declined on the grounds that there are "just too many stories left to tell."

This was the right call, according to Cavill's co-star Mecia Simson. Simson, who plays Francesca Findabair, said that The Witcher "is still going to be great" without Cavill. At the same time, the actor admitted she was "very shocked" when she learned that Cavill was leaving the show and said she was sad to see the British actor go.

The Witcher Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix. Season 3's two volumes are set to premiere on the platform on June 29 and July 27, 2023, respectively.
