This post contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 1, "Resurrection," and Episode 2, "Promises," now streaming on Disney+.

After Secret Invasion shocked fans by revealing Nick Fury's wife Priscilla Fury in Episode 2, audiences were left wondering whether the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. boss is aware that his spouse is actually a Skrull.

Deadline, director Ali Selim clarified how much Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) knows about his wife after the episode's closing moments saw his wife shift from Skrull to human before he lays eyes on her. "In the script, he knows. And when we shot it, it was interesting that maybe he didn’t know. We ultimately edited it in a way that made people feel like, 'I wonder if he knows or not,'" Selim said. "I can’t tease anything forward about his wife. The conversation in the lobby after the premiere the other night was, 'Does he know she’s a Skrull? Or does he not?' And I think either way works."

Selim goes on to say that Priscilla will serve as both a "support and a complication" for Nick Fury, insisting that whether he knows her true identity or not will have consequences either way. How these will impact the story going forward remain unknown, but the filmmaker does note that the mission to bring down Gravik will become all the more personal for Jackson's iconic spy. "The mission is external and it’s internal. I think that Nick Fury has to vanquish a villain, and the reason he has to vanquish that villain is that he created that villain through his promise. That’s what makes it personal," Selim concluded.

Who's Who in the Secret Invasion?

Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury as he embarks upon a quest to root out a group of Skrulls that are attempting to assume control of the Earth by taking the places of key political figures. The show was marketed as a more mature take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one that could have deep ramifications for the future of the franchise. Episode 1," Resurrection," concluded with the death of Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), a mainstay of the superhero franchise since The Avengers in 2012.

When asked about her character's demise, Smulders admitted that she was shocked the moment wasn't leaked beforehand. "There were a lot of people around, so I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked," Smulders said. "I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, 'Don’t spoil it for people.' And nobody did, thankfully."
