Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's Harrison Ford recently explained the difference between the upcoming blockbuster's protagonist and the superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ford argued that Indy's everyman qualities set him apart from the more fantastical, costumed adventurers of the MCU in an interview with Variety. "I think we've got a lot of ordinary heroes out there," he said. "They just don't appear in movies all the time. I mean, it's a convention in drama… the unexpected hero, but I have always insisted that I really don't want to be characterized as playing heroes. I play archaeologists or heart surgeons, or, you know, presidents of the United States who get into a shitstorm and decide to do something about it. But this film was more than that. I've just done a Marvel movie, I know a hero when I see one. He's got a cape. He can fly or something like that. But this film is not about heroes [like that]."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will mark the last time that Ford portrays this particular "ordinary hero," as he's already announced that he's retiring from the Indiana Jones role. Ford confirmed that Dial of Destiny is intended to serve as the final installment in the action-adventure franchise, and indicated that Lucasfilm has no plans to replace him as Indy. The Hollywood icon also made it clear that he isn't involved in the Indiana Jones streaming series that the studio is reportedly developing, either.

Why Harrison Ford Reprised the Indiana Jones Role

Ford opened up about his decision to revisit the Indiana Jones franchise in a recent interview, opining that he was keen to see "a completion" of the intrepid archaeologist's character arc. He added that Dial of Destiny gave him the opportunity to portray Indy "when he's beyond the youthful enthusiasm and capacity" he demonstrated during his early escapades. According to Ford, this depiction of Jones provided Dial of Destiny with the perfect platform for him to embark on an "unexpected, unanticipated adventure" one more time.

While Ford's comments reflect his enduring affection for the Indiana Jones role, he's since let it be known that he doesn't regret turning in Indy's fedora and bullwhip. "I don't think I'm gonna miss anything [about playing Indiana Jones]," he said. "I appreciate all of the opportunities the character has given me."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in cinemas on June 30, 2023.
