Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's Mads Mikkelsen just seemingly spoiled the final fate of the upcoming blockbuster's main villain, Jürgen Voller.

Mikkelsen appeared to confirm that Voller will die before Dial of Destiny's end credits roll in an interview with Variety. "It's always fun to die in a film," he said. "It means that you're important in some way, right? And I've not died in Danish, German and French [language films]. So if they offer me something in English I'm game, but I'm not, like, starving for it. I do a lot of interesting stuff back home [in Denmark]."

While Mikkelsen's comments strongly suggest the Voller won't make it out of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny alive, it's currently unclear if the same applies to Indiana Jones, as well. That said, co-writer/director James Mangold hinted that Indy will survive Dial of Destiny's finale in a recent interview. Asked how Dial of Destiny compares to 2017's Logan, Mangold noted that with the latter, he crafted "a kind of beautiful ending" for its protagonist, Wolverine, whereas with the former, he wasn't "ending the character." Mangold also said that Dial of Destiny isn't a "tragic adventure" like Logan, further implying that Indiana Jones will emerge from his fifth big screen outing largely unscathed.

Harrison Ford Retires from the Indiana Jones Role

Whether the franchise itself will continue beyond Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is another matter entirely, though. Harrison Ford has repeatedly stated that he is retiring from the Indiana Jones role after Dial of Destiny's release, and recently made it clear that he has no regrets about hanging up Indy's bullwhip and fedora for good. "It's time for me to grow up," he said. "Six years ago, I thought maybe we ought to take a shot at making another one. And I wanted it to be about age because I think that rounds out the story that we've told and we brought it to the right place."

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy previously announced that there are no plans to replace Ford as Indiana Jones, although she noted that the franchise could still live on as Disney+ streaming series. Kennedy also acknowledged that a spinoff headlined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena Shaw could happen, however, she was quick to add that such a project is not currently in development.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters on June 30, 2023.
