Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to hit theaters on June 30th, depicting the final adventure of Harrison Ford's eponymous treasure hunter. During the film, Indy will team up with Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena Shaw, a brand-new companion who gives the aging explorer a run for his money. Helena joins a long list of Indiana Jones sidekicks.

Indy's former companions have accompanied him on his various adventures throughout the Indiana Jones franchise. While some of Indy's sidekicks have become fan favorites, like Short Round and Henry Jones Sr., others like Mutt and Satipo are far less compelling.

10 Mac

Mac betrays Indy to the Russians in Indiana Jokes and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

George "Mac" McHale is a British agent and an old compatriot of Indiana Jones during World War II. However, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull reveals that Mac is a double agent who works for Irina Spalko and the Soviets.

There aren't very many good things about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Mac certainly isn't one of them. The character is nothing short of exhausting, as he flicks back and forth between loyalty to the Soviets and to Indy. Mac is nowhere near as compelling as Indy's other traitorous sidekicks in the series and eventually meets a well-deserved end in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's final act.

9 Satipo

Alfred Molina as Satipo in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Satipo is a local man whom Indiana Jones enlists to help him uncover the Golden Idol in the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Portrayed by Alfred Molina, Satipo betrays Indy and steals the idol for himself, only to end up killed by one of the traps in the temple.

There are few redeeming qualities about Satipo, who takes the first chance he gets to betray Indy. Satipo was selfish, cowardly, and out of his depth. He quickly finds himself overtaken by the traps in the hidden temple, proving that he wasn't even equipped to venture there in the first place.

8 Willie Scott

Willie Scott screaming in Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom

Kate Capshaw portrays Willie Scott, Indy's love interest in Temple of Doom. Willie was performing in Shanghai when she inadvertently got in the middle of Indiana Jones's rivalry with the Chinese Triad. This led her to join Indy on his ensuing adventures.

Willie Scott is a typical damsel in distress who's famous for her incessant screaming, which carries on throughout most of Temple of Doom. While she has often been the source of ridicule, the character does have a few redeeming moments and eventually acclimates to Indy's life of adventure. Willie is a popular and iconic sidekick, even if she's a little annoying.

7 Mutt Williams

Shia LeBeouf as Mutt Williams in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Henry "Mutt" Williams, portrayed in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull by Shia LeBeouf, joins Indy on his quest to return the mysterious crystal skull to its original resting place. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull eventually reveals that Henry was born "Henry Jones III" before he adopted his stepfather's last name, which means Mutt is Marion and Indy's son.

The idea of Mutt Williams works far better than the actual execution. While Mutt's relationship with his father has its compelling moments, he never quite lives up to the Jones legacy that would allow him to one day follow in Indy's footsteps. As such, it seems very likely that Mutt will sit out the events of Dial of Destiny, fading into obscurity as the franchise moves on without him.

6 Elsa Schneider

Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody) betrays Indy in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Alison Doody portrayed Dr. Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Initially, Elsa is Indiana Jones's love interest and a key helper in finding the Holy Grail. However, The Last Crusade eventually reveals that Elsa is working with the Nazis. Obsessed with obtaining the Grail as a prize, Elsa eventually loses her life while trying to take the artifact from its resting place.

Elsa Schneider may not have been a reliable ally, but she remains an intensely compelling character. The Last Crusade balances Elsa's love for Indy, lust for the Grail, and allegiance to the Nazis in one very complex character. Elsa makes a great Indiana Jones villain, even if she failed as a sidekick.

5 Marcus Brody

Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) looking confused in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Denholm Elliot portrays Dr. Marcus Brody, an old friend of Indiana Jones who first appears in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Marcus is the curator of a museum, which often displays the artifacts Indiana Jones picks up on his journeys. Despite his hesitancy, Marcus eventually accompanies Indy on his quest to find the Holy Grail during the events of The Last Crusade.

What Marcus lacks in resourcefulness he makes up for in intelligence, becoming one of the few supporting characters whose vast knowledge rivals Indy's. He may not be very brave, but Marcus is also fiercely loyal to his friends. He never breaks the faith that Indiana Jones has placed in him.

4 Sallah

Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Sallah Muhammad Faisel el-Kahir is one of Indiana Jones's closest friends and a frequent companion on his journeys. Portrayed by John Rhys-Davies, Sallah is integral in helping Indy uncover both the lost Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail. Sallah is also confirmed to appear one last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Sallah is loyal, friendly, and personable, and he has become one of the most beloved characters in the Indiana Jones franchise. While he prefers the quiet life he has built with his family, Sallah's love for adventure makes him a fun ally to Indiana Jones on his best adventures.

3 Marion Ravenwood

Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Marion Ravenwood, portrayed by Karen Allen, makes her debut in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Marion is the daughter of Abner Ravenwood, Indy's mentor, and a bar owner in Nepal. Marion eventually marries Indiana Jones at the end of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with their son, Mutt, in attendance.

Marion is one of the few supporting characters who can keep up with Indiana Jones, both in conversation and in the midst of an adventure. Her keenness to jump into the action is part of what makes her such a perfect pairing for Indy, whether in matrimony or in treasure hunting.

2 Short Round

Short Round turning around in a car in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Future Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan appears in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as Short Round, Indy's 12-year-old sidekick. Short Round is an orphan who follows Indiana Jones on his adventures, looking up to the older treasure hunter as a father figure and a best friend.

Temple of Doom is a great movie, and a large part of this is thanks to Short Round. Indy shows open affection to Short Round, who brings out a different side of the franchise's protagonist. Their relationship shows just how tenderhearted and loving Indy can be. It also doesn't hurt that Short Round isn't afraid to let loose and beat up another child if the mission calls for it.

1 Henry Jones Sr.

Henry Jones Sr (Sean Connery) looks up at his son in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Sean Connery portrays Henry Jones Sr., Indy's stern father, in The Last Crusade. Henry spent much of his son's childhood seeking the Holy Grail, which damaged their relationship. However, Henry and Indy eventually team up again to uncover the Grail before the Nazis do. The Last Crusade gives them a chance to repair their broken relationship.

As difficult as it is for Henry and Indy to get along, their relationship is a major highlight of The Last Crusade. The two are more similar than they would like to admit, which they eventually come to realize during the course of their adventure together. The repaired relationship between father and son is the most nuanced and emotional storyline in the franchise, making Henry the best companion of the Indiana Jones series.
