Harrison Ford recently doubled down on his commitment to making Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny his last outing as the franchise's titular protagonist.

Ford reiterated his intention to retire from the Indiana Jones role in an interview with BBC News. "It is my final film," he said. "And I was always ambitious with this final film." Ford added that his decision to step down as Indy stemmed at least partly from the desire to avoid retreading the same ground as previous Indiana Jones installments. "I was not so much interested in doing the same thing over and over again, I wanted to have an emotional ending to this character. And I'm so grateful for the audience that we've had, I just wanted to make sure that they would be satisfied and happy with the final iteration," he said.

Ford first announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will mark his final appearance as Indiana Jones in May 2023. He went on to confirm that, to the best of his knowledge, Lucasfilm has no intention of replacing him with another actor and predicted that Indy won't appear on the big screen again. In a subsequent interview, the 80-year-old actor insisted that he wasn't sad to bid farewell to one of his most iconic roles, opining that it was "time for [him] to grow up."

Ford expressed similar sentiments more recently, dismissing the idea that he will pine for the Indiana Jones franchise after Dial of Destiny's release. "I don't think I'm gonna miss anything," he said. "I appreciate all of the opportunities the character has given me." Elaborating further, Ford spoke about his immense gratitude for the "freedom" that movies' success bestowed upon him, as well as the way they have allowed him to "satisfy a broad audience." The Hollywood legend also highlighted how much he "enjoyed" portraying Indy over the 42 years following Raiders of the Lost Ark's debut.

Fans of Ford's work needn't worry that the star is retiring from acting altogether after Dial of Destiny drops, though. On the contrary, Ford recently stated that he plans to keep performing for the foreseeable future. "I don't do well when I don’t have work. I love to work. I love to feel useful. It's my Jones. I want to be helpful," he said.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in cinemas on June 30, 2023.
