Harrison Ford recently revealed the one condition he had when signing on for each of the Indiana Jones franchise's sequels (including Dial of Destiny).

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Ford explained that he only agreed to reprise the Indiana Jones role in Raiders of the Lost Ark's four follow-up films on the proviso they explore new facets of Indy's character. "One thing I asked for in each of them was to further embrace a complication of the character," he said. "I wanted to know more about Indiana Jones. I wanted the things that he did to be generated out of his character, out of his nature, out of his experience. I didn't want it just to be pinned on like a merit badge."

Nothing will convince Ford to take up Indiana Jones' signature bullwhip a sixth time, though. The Hollywood legend announced in May 2023 that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will mark not only his final outing as Indy but also the end of the franchise itself. Ford reiterated his intention to retire from arguably his most iconic role in a more recent interview, insisting that he would rather quit than make "the same thing over and over again." At the same time, Ford also talked up Dial of Destiny as an "emotional ending" for the Indiana Jones character and thanked fans for supporting him and the franchise for more than four decades.

Harrison Ford's Parting Words to Indiana Jones Fans

Ford's gratitude towards the Indiana Jones fanbase has been a recurring theme throughout his appearances on the film's promotional circuit. It even served as the throughline of the short yet heartfelt retirement speech he gave to commemorate his last-ever performance as Indiana Jones. Asked if he had any parting words for the franchise's many devotees, Ford borrowed one of Indy's lines from Dial of Destiny, "Thanks for putting up with me." After a brief pause, the 80-year-old actor added: "I hope you've had a good time… I sure have."

Ford's exit from the Indiana Jones franchise has sparked intense speculation about whether Lucasfilm will find other ways to produce additional projects set in the same universe. Notably, several pop culture commentators have suggested that the production company is considering a spinoff movie headlined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena Shaw. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that a Helena Shaw spinoff is "entirely possible," although she also noted that such a project was not currently in the works.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in cinemas now.
