My Hero Academia's Quirk Singularity Theory is a doomsday prediction that was first proposed by Dr. Kyudai Garaki. He imagined a bleak situation for the future of a Quirk-based society, where these supernatural abilities would become increasingly difficult to control over the generations. Since Quirks are genetic, they would continue to combine with each other across generations until they one day grew into overwhelming powers that couldn’t be controlled by their wielders.

What one typically expects from victims of the Quirk Singularity Theory are people who can just barely resist the effects of their own powerful Quirks. Classic examples include Class 1-A’s Kaminari Denki and Toya Todoroki of the League of Villains. Himiko Toga’s Transform is a simple ability compared to those more visually powerful Quirks, yet it satisfies all the conditions necessary for the young villainess to be considered one of the many silent victims of the Singularity Theory.

How Himiko Toga’s Transform Can Be Attributed to Quirk Singularity

Himiko Toga surprised with Twice's hand holding her face in My Hero Academia.

Himiko Toga’s Transform Quirk, one of the most distinctive in all of My Hero Academia, allows her to shape-shift into anyone without fail. The only condition is that the length of her transformation depends on how much of their blood she’s consumed. After she received her Quirk Awakening, Toga gained the additional ability to tap into the Quirks of those she’s transformed into. However, this new power-up has so far been limited to only the people Toga loves.

Quirks always influence their wielder’s personality (or vice-versa, perhaps) to an extent, but this phenomenon is taken to the extreme in Toga's case. Ever since her ability manifested, Toga has had an odd fascination with blood. She claims to find people most attractive when they are bleeding and bruised and has no qualms about violently imposing her standards of beauty on others. She was one of the members who flocked to Shigaraki after word of the Hero Killer’s capture got out; though she claimed to love Stain in her entry interview, she also expressed a desire to kill him in the same breath.

Himiko Toga May Not Even Fit Into a Judgment-Free MHA Society

Himiko Toga In My Hero Academia

Although Toga’s homicidal behavior is apparent to all who view her -- her teammates and MHA 's audience alike -- it has always just been her unique way of interacting with the world from her point of view. Even as a child, Toga would horrify her parents with how gleefully innocent she looked as she drained the blood out of small animals. For a time, they successfully convinced her to repress the urges her Quirk compelled her to fulfill, but one can only suppress their true nature for so long. She fled her home in her teenage years as she couldn’t keep up this mask indefinitely.

Toga’s abilities to shape-shift and mimic Quirks are powerful enough to be considered an example of the Singularity effect, but it's her inability to rein in its influence on her personality that is the real smoking gun. Unfortunately for Toga, her Quirk seems to have predestined her for a life of villainy, which seems at odds with My Hero Academia’s theme of everyone deserving salvation. In a future Hero Society that allows free expression of Quirks without discrimination, will there still be a place for her?
