Production has paused on both Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again and DC Studios' The Penguin until the end of the Writers Guild of America strike.

According to Deadline, the two upcoming superhero dramas will not resume production until the conclusion of the WGA strike, which began on May 2. New York-based writers have routinely picketed around the production of Daredevil, leading to multiple shutdowns, the most recent being on June 12. The Penguin, a spinoff of Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman, has also been targeted by WGA East picketers. At this time, it is unknown when the current WGA strike will be resolved.

Daredevil and The Penguin join a list of superhero productions affected by the WGA strike. Filming on Blade and Thunderbolts, two upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films, has also been delayed. The ongoing strike was also listed as a reason behind Disney's recent release calendar shuffle, which resulted in Marvel Studios' entire film slate being pushed back. Deadpool 3 was the lone exception as the upcoming threequel actually saw its release date move up several months.

What Is Daredevil: Born Again?

Daredevil: Born Again acts as a spiritual sequel to the Netflix Daredevil series, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio both reprising their roles from the latter as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively. While plot details for Born Again remain under wraps, the Disney+ series will reportedly continue storylines established in the upcoming MCU limited series, Echo, such as Kingpin "running for mayor of New York City." Filming on Daredevil: Born Again's 18-episode first season began in February 2023 in New York City. According to Deadline, when production resumes, the series will have five months of filming left to complete.

The Penguin Continues Oswald Cobblepot's Story

Announced in September 2021, The Penguin will follow Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot one week after the events of 2022's The Batman as he attempts to take control of Gotham's criminal underworld. The eight-episode limited series began filming in March 2023. In addition to Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin is confirmed to feature members of Gotham's two foremost crime families -- the Falcones and the Maronis.

Cristin Milioti, perhaps best known for playing the titular mother in CBS' How I Met Your Mother, has been cast as Sofia Falcone while character actor Clancy Brown will portray Salvatore Maroni. Additional cast members include Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O'Connell, with Robert Pattinson's Batman also rumored to appear.

Daredevil: Born Again and The Penguin are both expected to premiere in 2024.
