The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 2, "Promises," now streaming on Disney+.

Nick Fury has a pretty good reason for wanting to leave the Avengers out of the mess he has created with the Skrulls.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe series' second episode, "Promises," Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) secretly meets with Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to discuss the Skrull threat. When Rhodes asks Fury if they should "call our friends," a.k.a. the Avengers, Fury quickly dismisses the idea, explaining that they couldn't risk the Avengers getting duplicated by the Skrulls and turned into terrorists. Fury then reiterates that the Skrull invasion is "my war."

Jackson had previously revealed in March 2023 that Fury had a good reason for not bringing in the Avengers to help him tackle the Skrull invasion. "What he's not doing is calling in his super friends. So that's part of the whole dilemma," Jackson said at the time. "I mean, people want them and he's not bringing them." The actor also explained that there was "a very good reason he's holding back" from calling them. Episode 2 seemingly reveals that reason to be that Fury is fearful of the Avengers being replaced by Skrulls without his knowledge.

Cobie Smulders Was Surprised Maria Hill's Fate Didn't Leak

Secret Invasion, which premiered on Disney+ on June 21, ended its first episode with a major death. Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill, who first appeared in the MCU in Marvel's The Avengers (2012), was killed by the rebel Skrull leader Gravik in the closing moments of "Resurrection." Smulders, who knew her character's fate from day one, recently revealed that she was surprised Maria Hill's death didn't leak before the episode was released. "There were a lot of people around, so I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked," Smulders said. "I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, 'Don’t spoil it for people.' And nobody did, thankfully."
