The popular shōnen manga, My Hero Academia, might be nearing its end.

As detailed on Anime Dork, My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi recently announced the results of the series' 8th popularity poll, which had fans vote for their favorite characters. In his message, Horikoshi stated that he believes this may be My Hero Academia's last popularity poll, which suggests that the author is working towards the series finale.

My Hero Academia Creator's Ill Health

Horikoshi made this announcement before the start of the manga's two-week publishing hiatus, which officially began on Feb. 2. The manga will resume serialization on Feb. 20 in Weekly Shonen Jump No. 12. Since December, this is the second time the publisher put My Hero Academia on hiatus due to Horikoshi's faltering health. The artist also took at least two publishing breaks in 2021 for similar reasons. Although Horikoshi's poor health has been a recurring issue, their recent message does not give this as a reason for a possible series wrap-up.

My Hero Academia launched in Weekly Shōnen Jump on July 7, 2014. Its story takes place in a world where most humans are born with superpowers called "Quirks." To defeat the villains of this universe, many enroll in a prestigious school called Hero Academy to grow stronger and master their powers. Izuku Midoriya is one of these heroic hopefuls, even though he does not possess a Quirk. The boy eventually catches the attention of the world-famous All Might, who agrees to train Midoriya and unlock his hidden potential by gifting him with the transferable "One for All" Quirk, which grants Midoriya a plethora of new abilities.

Studio BONES' anime adaptation of My Hero Academia is now in the middle of its sixth season, which premiered on Oct. 1, 2022. This season covers the events of the manga's "Paranormal Liberation War" arc and the "Dark Hero" arc, where "Deku," aka Midoriya, has left Hero Academy to join his fellow heroes in a high-stakes war against the Meta Liberation Army, a group of villains united by the belief that Quirks are a natural human right that society should not be allowed to regulate. To commemorate the "Dark Hero" arc, which starts on Feb. 11, BONES launched a new action-packed trailer in addition to a teaser visual showcasing Midoriya in his "Dark Deku" form.

The My Hero Academia anime is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
