CBR can exclusively reveal that Dark Horse Comics and Flux House Books are releasing a murder mystery series titled Subgenre created by Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres, the brilliant minds behind the comic series, BANG!
Subgenre is described as "a mind-bending, multidimensional murder mystery that stretches across many of Kindt’s previous books and all of genre-fiction itself." The series will be written by Kindt with art from Wilfredo Torres and colored by Bill Crabtree. The first issue of Subgenre will feature a variant cover from Brian Hurtt. And, every issue of the series will be presented in a pulp magazine format.
The protagonist of Subgenre is a man who is living two lives. By day, he is a private detective who is trying to solve a triple homicide in a "dystopian cyberpunk future." However, after he falls asleep, he becomes an adventurer in a magical but barbaric world. The series will explore who its main character truly is at his core and whether or not he can merge his realities without completely losing himself.
Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres Team Up Again For Subgenre
Matt Kindt describes the writing process for Subgenre as intense and praised Wilfredo Torres for his work and commitment to the upcoming series. “I wrote the most dense script of my career in an effort to get every idea I’ve ever had about identity, writing, genre, and fiction into one big murder mystery. I owe Wilfredo many, many dinners.”
Subgenre #1 arrives in comic shops September 27, 2023. It is now available to pre-order for $7.99 (32 pages, 8” x 10.875”) at your local comic shop.
