Captain America: New World Order will have a grounded and realistic tone, compared to other recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Production designer Ramsey Avery, who's working on both the next Captain America movie and Prime Video's The Rings of Power, recently spoke to Collider about his projects. Avery said he's excited that Marvel Studios is "trying some new stuff" with New World Order, and they're taking a more "forward-thinking" approach during production. "The intent of this is to be very grounded, to make sure it has that sense of really happening in the world," said Avery. "So it's a different sense in a lot of ways than particularly some of the more recent pieces have been. And it's a very deliberate choice, and it's a fascinating choice and an exciting choice. And it comes with a whole host of different kinds of questions involved in that."

New World Order will pick up where the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended, following the former Falcon Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) after he formally takes up the mantle of Captain America. Director Julius Onah (Luce, The Cloverfield Paradox) described the movie as a "paranoid thriller," and confirmed that it will see the return of The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson), who began his radioactive transformation at the end of The Incredible Hulk in 2008. Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar and WWE wrester Seth Rollins have also reportedly been cast as members of the Serpent Society, with the former playing the villain Diamondback.

Sam Wilson Takes Up Captain America's Shield

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered in March 2021, starring Mackie and Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier. In the show, Wilson initially feels unworthy of becoming Captain America after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) chose him as a successor in Avengers; Endgame. However, Wilson changes his mind after facing off against both the revolutionary Flag Smashers and the U.S. government's unstable choice for the new Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell). Wilson's winged Captain America uniform debuts in the show's finale, while Walker becomes the vigilante U.S. Agent and is recruited into The Thunderbolts.

New World Order will be Marvel Studios' first of three movies to come out next year. The film will be followed by Thunderbolts in July 2024, which stars Harrison Ford as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, replacing the late William Hurt. After that, Marvel Studios' Blade reboot is scheduled to come out in Sept. 2024 and conclude the MCU's Phase Five, although star Mahershala Ali's requested script rewrites and the ongoing WGA strike have reportedly caused delays.
