Joker: Folie à Deux star Zazie Beetz might be on the prowl for another DC role, expressing her interest to play Catwoman.

Speaking to Inverse, Beetz, who's known for playing Sophie Dumond in the Joker film franchise, revealed her desire to play Catwoman, praising the "iconic" character and expressing how much of a dream role it would be. "I can’t be playing too many superhero types of movies!" she said. However, the actor added that if she were to continue in the superhero genre, she'd like to play Catwoman.

"She’s just so iconic, and it’s already been done so many times," Beetz said. "I don’t know, she’s just cool, and I feel like I am a cat at heart myself." Apart from her role in the Joker films, Beetz has previously starred in another superhero movie as fan-favorite Domino in 2018's Deadpool 2. However, she will not reprise the role of the mercenary mutant and X-Force member in Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3.

Catwoman Across Film

Catwoman has appeared in live-action across various Batman films and eponymous standalone features. Among the actors to don the anti-hero's famed catsuit are Lee Meriweather in 1966's Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns (1992), Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004), Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022). DC Studios is currently working on its new Batman reboot, The Brave and the Bold, though it's unknown if Catwoman will appear in the upcoming project.

In Folie à Deux, Beetz returns as Sophie, a cynical single mother who is the object of Arthur Fleck/Joker's (Joaquin Phoenix) fantasies. Beetz was confirmed to return for the Joker sequel in September 2022. In the same interview with Inverse, Beetz admitted that she couldn't give away any details about the upcoming film. "I was just told that I cannot speak on Joker, so unfortunately I can’t give you any tidbits," she said. "But I think there’s a lot of talent on that set." Beetz and Phoenix star in the sequel alongside Lady Gaga, who portrays Harley Quinn.

Joker was not intended to have a sequel, simply meant to be a standalone film separate from the DC Universe. However, the movie flourished at the box office, prompting the development of a sequel in 2019. Joker earned $1.074 billion on a budget of up to $70 million, with the film winning two Academy Awards, including a Best Actor win for Phoenix.

Filming for Folie à Deux began in November 2022. Production wrapped in April, with the announcement accompanied by a spooky visual of Gaga's Harley Quinn. Folie à Deux cost $150 million to make and is directed by Todd Phillips, who also helmed the original movie. While little is known about the film's plot, it has been confirmed that the Joker sequel will be a musical.

Folie à Deux opens in theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
