The following contains spoilers for Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Spider-Gwen's new nemesis just revealed how they plan to kill her across the multiverse -- and why.

Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #4 (by writer Emily Kim, artist Kei Zama, inker Oren Junior, and colorist Tríona Farrell) finds the titular hero and her more benevolent clones finally caught in the grasp of the villainous Lyla Bennett. As Gwen soon comes to discover, Lyla not only blames Gwen for her husband's death and created the cloned amalgamations of Gwen and the Sinister Six in a bid for revenge, but she has also developed a way to kill every iteration of her in the multiverse in a single fell swoop.

Lyla Bennett believes Gwen Stacy is responsible for her husband's death.

Introduced in the first issue of Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones, Lyla Bennett is a brilliant scientist whose partner in both the lab and in life was killed during a battle between Spider-Gwen and the then dimensionally displaced Sinister Six. Since then, Lyla has unleashed her army of clones upon Gwen, only for several of them to be freed from the villain's control and end up working alongside the original as she attempts to set things right.

Lyla Bennett Could Be Gwen Stacy's Archnemesis

Although Lyla is far from a household name, she is quickly proving to be a proper nemesis for the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65, better known as Spider-Gwen (officially Ghost-Spider). First appearing in 2014's Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (by writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez), Earth-65's Gwen quickly became a fan-favorite following her debut as Spider-Woman. After making her mark on the multiverse, this Gwen has gained, lost, and regained her powers, all of which she has put to use as one of the most prominent heroes in the Spider-Verse.

While Spider-Gwen has played key roles in various stories in the Marvel Universe, she has also come to play just as important of a part on the silver screen as voiced by Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld. The character's first appearance on the big screen in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse alongside Shameik Moore's Miles Morales set up the possibility of a future romance between the two, while her return in the recently released Across the Spider-Verse pushed her further into the limelight.

Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #4 is written by Emily Kim with art by Kei Zama, inks by Oren Junior, colors by Tríona Farrell, design by Anthony Gambino and letters by VC's Ariana Maher.
