The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke opened up about the show's decision to explore the history of Vought in Season 3 beyond what was written in Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s original comic book series.

In a recent interview with Variety, Kripke discussed the reason why they decided to deviate more from the source material when they created the storyline for The Boys Season 3. He revealed the creative team wanted to expand Vought’s history in order to "explain how it [the world] came to be" after showing viewers "how our world was" during the first two installments. In this way, they were able to uncover "the generations of mistakes and ill-advised wars and toxic masculinity that sort of got us to the shithole we can so often be in."

One of the major additions to The Boys Season 3 was Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), a sardonic parody of Captain America whose backward thinking is the topic of several controversies. Raised in a different generation, Ackles has openly discussed how his character is the embodiment of toxic masculinity, which was the core theme of the show's third chapter. "We had this character who took you through all these decades of thought [about what it means to be a man], and he was just what guys were really like [in the 1940s]," the actor said. "They weren’t necessarily the greatest generation. Once we knew that that was the theme, we knew that it was how that's getting passed down over the generations. It became a really relatable way to tell that story."

The Boys' Future

The Boys Season 4 officially wrapped its production over a month ago, with the cast sharing bloody set photos teasing another season of epic action, violence and gore. Further details about the next installment’s plot are still being kept under wraps, but fans are expected to meet lots of new faces joining the superhero series’ ensemble cast. This includes The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who previously worked with Kripke on the series Supernatural. According to Black Noir actor Nathan Mitchell, Morgan is going to play an unforgettable character, whose "Sun sign is 'badass,' and his Moon sign is 'You don't even want to f---ing know.'"

Antony Starr, who’s also returning to reprise his fan-favorite antagonistic role as Homelander, previously teased his character’s storyline for Season 4, revealing that things will only get "weirder and weirder and weirder" going forward. "I was looking at the person I was opposite, and I said, ‘What are we doing? I can’t believe this!'" Starr said. “I could have done anything else with my life, but here I am doing this? It was truly the most bizarre thing I’ve ever done."

The Boys Seasons 1-3 are available for streaming on Prime Video, along with the animated spinoff The Boys Presents: Diabolical.
