While The Boys Season 4 may be inching closer to release, it may be postponed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, showrunner and writer Eric Kripke noted that he doesn't yet have a solid release date for the Prime Video series' fourth but it entirely depends on what happens with the strike. "The Boys update! 1) When Season 4 drops depends on how long the WGA Strike goes. No answer yet. Tell the studios to make a fair deal!" Kripke wrote. To soften the news, he also shared new artwork for the upcoming installment in the form of a fictional cereal box featuring The Deep and an undersea-themed word search puzzle.

Details on The Boys Season 4 are still largely under wraps but many of the cast and crew have expressed their excitement about the show's gruesome content getting more outlandish than ever before. Antony Starr, known for playing the villainous Homelander, noted that while shooting the latest episodes, he was forced to look around at what was happening and question how his career ever got to where it is. "I was looking at the person I was opposite, and I said, ‘What are we doing? I can’t believe this! I could have done anything else with my life, but here I am doing this?' It was truly the most bizarre thing I’ve ever done," Starr said.

The Weird World of The Boys

The Boys follows a group of vigilantes that take it upon themselves to rid the world of "Supes" who have left their powers corrupt them and act purely out of self-interest. With the sponsorship of the megacorporation Vought, the team known as The Seven is granted free reign to do what they want without repercussions, resulting in copious amounts of blood and violence. The show has garnered a passionate following and plenty of praise from critics who laud its mature tone and smart parody of contemporary society.

Producer Seth Rogen has spoken at length about why he thinks The Boys has managed to garner such popularity despite its often grotesque content. The long-time comedian and actor noted that the adult-themes allow for audiences who grew up with Marvel movies to expand their horizons beyond traditional superhero stories. "We had the same experience that I think, now, audiences are having, which is: 'Oh, we've been reading Marvel for the last 15 years and now there's starting to be stuff like this, which is a great addition to this landscape,'" Rogen said.

The Boys Season 4 does not yet have a release date but Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Prime Video.
