The following contains major spoilers for the Season 3 finale of The Mandalorian, "Chapter 24: The Return."

While The Mandalorian's recently concluded Season 3 has expanded on young Grogu's growth as a character, little remains known about the character's family. And showrunner Dave Filoni doesn't expect that to change.

Filoni was asked whether he had any information on Grogu's family or species at the recent Star Wars Celebration event. "If I told you I did it would just be so sad for you," Filoni said in a video from TikTok user @the_real_k_imbot and shared by @sw_tweets on Twitter. "And then you'd know that I know and won't tell you and that would be cruel, so I won't say."

While Filoni's tight-lipped response didn't preclude any potential for exploring that part of Grogu's backstory, the director was also asked if he ever intended to pursue it.

"No, I don't think so," Filoni said. "Mando's his family."

What's Known of Grogu's Actual Family?

That statement is especially true following The Mandalorian's Season 3 finale, "Chapter 24: The Return." Near the end of the episode, Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, formally adopts Grogu as his own, enabling the foundling to officially become his apprentice, now known as Din Grogu. Grogu is not able to officially become a Mandalorian himself, however, because the child remains too young to recite the Creed of Mandalore.

The ceremony takes place in the wake of the group's retaking Mandalore and restarting of their Great Forge. The episode only contains a brief mention of Grogu's heritage, with the Armorer stating that any relatives the foundling might have are likely far from Mandalore.

Din Djarin and Grogu's relationship has been a focal point of The Mandalorian, with the then-unnamed Grogu being introduced in the series' pilot episode. Din was originally contracted to deliver Grogu to the remaining Jedi, with Grogu later taken in to be trained by Luke Skywalker. The youngling opted to return to Din's side, however, and the pair have since forged a father/son-type bond.

Some of Grogu's earlier days were previously revealed in the show's Season 3 episode, "Chapter 20: The Foundling," when Ahmed Best's Jedi Kelleran Beq rescued Grogu from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant during the newfound Galactic Empire's execution of Order 66. But no mention was made of his parentage.

Likewise, little is known of Grogu's species. The force-sensitive youngling is only the third of his species seen in canon, preceded by Jedi Masters Yoda and Yaddle, both of whom served on the Jedi council. Aside from being part of the same species, there is no known connection between Grogu and the others of his kind.
