Stranger Things star Maya Hawke confirmed that the Duffer Brothers are supporting the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike by putting any more writing on hold until after the strike is settled.

Netflix's Stranger Things has captivated the imagination of audiences worldwide for the past four seasons, but now Netflix’s flagship show is coming to an end with its fifth and final season. Stranger Things is set in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and stars Hawke, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Browne, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Matthew Modine, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, and Priah Ferguson. Hawkins has withstood attacks from otherworldly monsters and shady government researchers for the past four seasons. Season 5 of Stranger Things will be Hawkins’ greatest battle as the Upside Down prepares to invade the town. Unfortunately, according to Inverse, the wait for Season 5 will be longer than expected because of the ongoing WGA strike.

Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers, began working on scripts for Season 5 in August 2022, and the show was set to begin shooting in May 2023. However, production stopped when the WGA went on strike in early May. Hawke said, “I know that the Duffer Brothers have worked on this script and will continue to work on it when the strike is over.”

Even though the Duffer Brothers have already given sneak peeks of early scripts for Season 5 of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers also shared a note in support of the strike on Twitter, saying that "Writing does not stop when filming begins." Hawke also expressed hope that the Duffers “come to a fair deal with the same love and intensity and excitement they have all the other seasons, but with the added pressure and specificity of it being our farewell.”

All previous seasons of Stranger Things are currently available to stream on Netflix. There will unlikely be any updates on a potential premiere date for Season 5 until the WGA strike is over, and the Duffer Brothers agree to resume work on the final season of Stranger Things.
