Twisted Metal was first announced in February 2021 with Will Arnett, Rhett Reese, Michael Jonathan Smith and Paul Wernick on board as executive producers. Smith additionally serves as showrunner and writer on the series, which was based on an original take by Reese and Wernick. Peacock officially greenlit the half-hour action comedy in February 2022 and filming began the following May. Season 1 of Twisted Metal will follow John Doe (Mackie), a talkative milkman with amnesia, who is given a mission to traverse the post-apocalyptic wasteland to deliver a cryptic package in order to stay alive. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, John Doe will face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Twisted Metal Evokes Zombieland Movies

According to PlayStation Studios Senior Producer Carter Swan, Twisted Metal will feel very familiar to fans of Reese and Wernick's previous work, particularly the Zombieland and Deadpool movies. Swan previously stated that the screenwriting duo had no trouble adapting the games' "balls-out fun and craziness," stating, "They're able to kind of take these violent, ridiculous things and make them fun. Zombieland’s a good barometer if you look at what happens in that movie as to what we could do." Mackie echoed similar sentiments while teasing Twisted Metal's plot, saying, "It's just us driving cars and blowing stuff up and trying to make it to New San Francisco."

In addition to Mackie, Twisted Metal stars Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Quiet, Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as Agent Stone and Richard Cabral (Mayans M.C.) as Quiet's brother Loud with AEW wrestler Samoa Joe physically portraying Sweet Tooth while Arnett (The Lego Batman Movie) provides the character's voice. The show will also feature several recurring cast members including Scream's Neve Campbell as Raven, Mike Mitchell (The Tomorrow War) as Stu, Tahj Vaughans (P-Valley) as Stu's best friend Mike and Lou Beatty Jr. (NCIS) as grizzled and weathered cartographer Tommy.

Twisted Metal is set to premiere on Peacock in 2023.
