John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023, with a worldwide box office gross of over $430 million. This box office record also helped the franchise cross an impressive milestone, as it officially became the latest film series to cross the $1 billion mark. Just like its predecessors, Chapter 4 was also a hit among critics and fans alike, who praised the sequel's exhilarating action and cast performances.

John Wick: Chapter 4 was directed by Chad Stahelski from a screenplay written by Shay Hatten. It featured the return of Reeves as the titular hitman, whose all-out revenge rampage led him to become a high-value Excommunicado. In the latest sequel, John continues to fight for his freedom from the High Table after they’ve placed a multi-million bounty for his death. Joining him are returning cast members Ian McShane as Winston, Laurence Fishburne as the Bowery King, and the late Lance Reddick as Charon. Chapter 4 also introduced new characters such as Bill Skarsgård as the Marquis, Donnie Yen as Caine and Rina Sawayama as Akira.

What’s Next for the John Wick Franchise?

During Lionsgate's Q4 2023 earnings call, studio executive Joe Drake confirmed that John Wick 5 was in the early stages of development. Before this announcement, there were initial doubts about the possibility of John Wick 5 since Stahelski revealed that he and Reeves were planning a break from the franchise. "I'm sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it, and it goes kooky, then we'll take a quiet minute," Stahelski said at the time.

Following John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate is set to release the franchise's first spin-off Ballerina, which will be led by Ana de Armas. The project was inspired by the Ruska Roma syndicate scene from 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, which introduced the organization that trained John Wick. Reeves is expected to make an appearance in the spin-off and will have a brutal fight sequence against de Armas' character. Besides Ballerina, the studio is also prepared for the upcoming Peacock debut of the 3-part limited drama The Continental, a prequel centered around the origins of Winston and Charon.

The Continental premieres on Peacock in September, followed by the theatrical release of Ballerina on June 7, 2024.
