Peacock offered fans another look at its upcoming Twisted Metal series, highlighting many of the show's stars as well as Sweet Tooth, the homicidal poster boy of the franchise.
The new clip, which debuted as a part of Summer Games Fest 2023, follows John Doe (Anthony Mackie) as he slugs it out with the clown-mask-wearing murderer played by Samoa Joe with the voice of Will Arnett. The duo brawl in what appears to be an abandoned casino before their shared love of music diffuses the situation. At the time of writing, John and Sweet Tooth's extended relationship remains unknown but the video concludes with the former reluctantly attending what sounds like an ominous show.
Twisted Metal's accompanying promotional images highlight even more of the cast, including Stephanie Beatriz as the mysterious Quiet, decked out a face-obscuring bandana. Thomas Haden Church as Agent Stone also makes his debut, equipped with reflective aviators and a trim uniform. Fans also get their first look at Neve Campbell's Raven, although information about her character is still sparse.
Adapting Twisted Metal for TV
The same can largely be said about Twisted Metal's story as Peacock is keeping it close to the chest at the time of writing. The plot will follow John Doe as he's afforded a chance at a better life but only on the condition that he can safely deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. On his way, he encounters several bizarre characters and a group of survivors that desperately want what he's smuggling.
Twisted Metal is based on the classic PlayStation game, expanding the idea beyond the core conceit of explosive car battles and death-defying races. While the show will contain faces fans of the franchise will undoubtedly recognize, the story itself is an original tale from writer Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) and producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland).
Speaking about the challenges of adapting the video game to the small screen, PlayStation Studios Senior Producer Carter Swan explained that the creative team of Reese and Wernick were able to successfully unite the wild tone of the source material with a more dramatic story. "They're able to kind of take these violent, ridiculous things and make them fun," Swan said. "Zombieland’s a good barometer if you look at what happens in that movie as to what we could do."
Twisted Metal premieres on Peacock on July 27.
