Stardew Valley is a beloved staple of the simulation game genre, due primarily to its expansive gameplay, RPG elements and enormous amount of in-game content. Its multifaceted and flexible mechanics allow players to create a unique world and experience with every playthrough. However, no matter the direction that players choose to take, they will need a large amount of materials and resources to expand their farming operations. Unfortunately, many high-value resources don't become available (or indeed, affordable) until years into the game.

Modding has become very popular among players of the PC version of Stardew Valley, as through mods, players can add even more mechanics, content and resources to the already rich environment of Pelican Town. However, many gamers do not wish to mod the game, preferring to keep Stardew Valley in its original state. Luckily, there are ways to manipulate the game's code without downloading mods or otherwise affecting the base version, and doing so allows players to unlock even the rarest items easily and quickly.

Nearly Every Item in Stardew Valley Has a Unique Code

Nearly every item in Stardew Valley is assigned an ID value, which is represented by numbers within brackets. For example, within the game's code, the Strange Bun is represented by [203], while an Ancient Fruit is [454]. By exploiting the way the game reads these values, players can cause up to three items to appear in their inventory, which can then be kept or sold for profit. However, it should be noted that this exploit is not usable in the game's console versions.

How to Use Stardew Valley's Item Code Exploit

The Stardew Valley character creation screen allows for customization

The best way for players to exploit the game's item codes is by making the Farmer's name a string of up to three codes with no spaces. In doing so, every time the Farmer's name appears in any type of text box, those items will be instantly added to the inventory. For example, if the Farmer's name is [74][166][432], players will get a Prismatic Shard, a Treasure Chest and a Truffle Oil added to their backpack. Players can change their name, and by extension the type of items added, at the Shrine of Illusions in the Wizard's basement for 500g.

As the Shrine is unlocked after the Wizard's four heart event, this is relatively easy, but players may wish to select the most valuable items possible to start. This exploit can also be achieved when purchasing animals from Marnie or naming children, but it can only be done once these ways. Even so, this can be an excellent way to grab some rare, if not valuable, items.

High-Value Items and Their Codes

When picking items to use for this exploit, it's best to consider their usefulness, as players can only get three at a time. There are a handful of items in Stardew Valley that sell for a remarkable amount of gold even without iridium quality, which can be indispensable for those just starting their farm and veteran farmers alike. Unfortunately, structures like the farm Obelisks and most non-sellable items like the Horse Flute do not have assigned values that work for this exploit.
