The Warcraft multimedia franchise kicked off in 1994 with the release of Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. World of Warcraft debuted in 2004 and has gone on to have a total of nine major expansion packs, with the most recent, Dragonflight, dropping in 2022. In 2019, World of Warcraft Classic launched, allowing nostalgic gamers and new players alike to experience what the base game was like before the addition of the expansions.

Set in the immersive world of Azeroth, which incorporates elements of multiple genres like fantasy, horror, steampunk and science fiction, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) features a large open world that allows players to create customizable characters, complete quests and even take part in player-versus-player combat. The game does require a subscription to fully play, but unsubscribed players can initially use a trial account until they reach level 20.

World of Warcraft was the best-selling PC title in 2005 and 2006, and by November 2014, it had more than 100 million subscribers globally, according to Blizzard Entertainment. However, interest in the game quickly began to dwindle, and by June 2015, only a little over 5.5 million active accounts remained.

Despite declining popularity and players, World of Warcraft remains a cornerstone of the video game community. The game has been adapted into other mediums, including three board games and a trading card game. Notably, a Warcraft movie premiered in 2016. Directed by Duncan Jones and starring Travis Fimmel and Paula Patton, the project grossed $439 million worldwide, making it the highest-earning video game movie until The Super Mario Bros. Movie claimed the title in 2023. However, Jones revealed in 2018 that a sequel was unlikely to happen.
