Behind-the-scenes set photos from The Sandman have confirmed that the second season of the hit Netflix fantasy drama series has officially begun filming.

Per Daily Mail, the images show The Sandman star Tom Sturridge, in costume as Lord Morpheus/Dream, filming a scene with an undisclosed actor, whose character was dressed in a ghostly white version of Sturridge's outfit. Filming took place at the Durdle Door landmark near Lulworth in Dorset. Usually open to the public despite being privately owned, it was closed to the public to allow for the Netflix show to film there.

The Sandman is based on the critically-acclaimed DC Comics series of the same name created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg and published between 1989 and 1996. The first season was released on Netflix in August 2022, consisting of 11 episodes that adapted the events of the comic's first two story arcs -- Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll's House -- as well as the first two issues of the third story arc, Dream Country. Season 1 centered on Morpheus (Sturridge), the Dream King and one of the seven Endless, as he escaped imprisonment and set out to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming.

What Do Fans Know About The Sandman Season 2?

Despite a second season of The Sandman being ordered by Netflix in November 2022, there have not been details released to the public about what fans can expect in the next batch of episodes. Gaiman has confirmed that two characters not featured in Season 1 -- the comic's groundbreaking transgender character, Wanda Mann, and the youngest member of the Endless, Delirium -- will make their debut in Season 2. Leaked plot details for Season 2 also teased an adaptation of the "Brief Lives" story arc from the comics. Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, has also stated that The Sandman Season 2 may not release all at once. "Everything is on the table when it comes to Sandman," he said, including splitting up the release of new episodes in chunks like Netflix did with Stranger Things Season 4 and The Witcher Season 3.

The Sandman Is Part of a Shared Universe

While no spinoffs of The Sandman have been officially announced at this time, Netflix will soon be the home of another DC Comics adaptation -- Dead Boy Detectives -- which will take place in the same universe as The Sandman. Gaiman, who co-created both comics, was the one to confirm the two series' connection, responding to a fan on Twitter in April 2023 that "I think it's safe to say now" that Dead Boy Detectives and The Sandman exist in the same universe.

The Sandman Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix. A release date for Season 2 has not been set at this time.
